Iraqi forces under Saddam Hussein conducted the Anfal campaign against Kurdish populations, including the chemical attack on Halabja that killed approximately 5,000 people in a single day. Tens of thousands more were executed or disappeared.
After the 2003 invasion, the Iraqi High Tribunal convicted Saddam Hussein and Ali Hassan al-Majid (“Chemical Ali”) of genocide for the Anfal campaign. Both were executed. The campaign is recognized as genocide by several governments and scholars.
