Babi Yar (Expanded)

The Act

Nazi forces and collaborators shot tens of thousands of Jews and others into the Babi Yar ravine over two days in late September 1941, with further killings continuing afterward.

The Response

Soviet authorities long downplayed the specifically Jewish character of the massacre. Memorials were later erected; the site is now a major Holocaust memorial.
