Babi Yar

The Act

Nazi Einsatzgruppen and local collaborators murdered approximately 33,771 Jews in a ravine outside Kiev over two days. The killings were part of the broader “Holocaust by bullets.” Additional victims including Roma and Soviet POWs were killed at the same site later.

The Response

The site was long neglected under Soviet rule, which emphasized general Nazi crimes rather than the specifically Jewish character of the massacre. After Ukrainian independence, memorials were erected. The events are documented in the Nuremberg and other postwar records.
