Bangladesh Genocide

The Act

Pakistani military forces and collaborating militias carried out a campaign of mass murder, rape, and displacement against Bengali civilians, intellectuals, and Hindus. Estimates of deaths range from 300,000 to 3 million. The violence accompanied the Pakistani army's attempt to suppress the independence movement.

The Response

India intervened militarily, leading to the creation of Bangladesh and the surrender of Pakistani forces. The International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh later tried some collaborators. The events remain a central part of Bangladeshi national memory and a point of contention with Pakistan.
