Greek Genocide

1914–1922 · Ottoman Empire · Mass killing and expulsion of Anatolian Greeks

Greek Genocide

The Act

Ottoman and later Turkish nationalist forces killed or expelled hundreds of thousands of Greek Orthodox Christians from Anatolia and Pontus. Methods included massacres, forced labor battalions, and death marches. Estimates of deaths range from 300,000 to over 900,000.

The Response

The 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey formalized the removal of remaining Greek communities. Greece and several other countries recognize the events as genocide. Turkey rejects the classification.
