Soviet authorities imposed grain requisitions, restricted movement, and confiscated food, producing a famine that killed an estimated 3.5 to 5 million (some estimates higher) Ukrainians. The policy is widely viewed as deliberately targeting the Ukrainian peasantry and national identity.
The Soviet Union denied the famine's existence and suppressed information. Ukraine's parliament recognized it as genocide in 2006. More than 30 countries have issued similar recognitions. Russia rejects the genocide classification. No international criminal tribunal addressed the events.
