Islamic State forces attacked the Yazidi minority, killing thousands of men and older women and enslaving thousands of women and girls for sexual violence. Mass graves have been documented. The intent to destroy the group was explicit.
Kurdish and international forces later liberated the area. Several countries and the UN have recognized the events as genocide. Prosecutions of ISIS members have occurred in national courts and through the UNITAD investigative team, though many perpetrators remain at large.
